HOW TO FIND OUT YOUR LAPTOP SCREEN SIZE WITHOUT MEASURING

How To Measure Your Laptop Screen Size – The Correct Way!

That moment when you need to fix or replace your laptop’s screen or to purchase a case for your laptop, and you are asked what size the screen is. You probably don’t have the measurements memorized, nor a ruler or measuring apparatus on you. Here are a few hacks on how to find out your laptop screen size without measuring it.

There are different types of measurements for computer screens. So depending on the need for the dimensions; the physical size, the pixels, square per inch, confirm what dimensions you specifically require. To measure the actual screen physically, note that you will need to avoid the plastic edge (the bezel) around the screen and only measure the screen area. Nonetheless, this would not necessarily apply if you need the measurements for uses such as a laptop case or bag, or for screen protectors that may be applied beyond your laptop screen. Also, unless otherwise stated, your laptop’s screen’s dimensions are to be measured diagonally, from one corner to the other.

Using your laptop’s model specifications

A simple way to finding your laptop’s screen size without measuring is to check your laptop’s model specifications. These specifications would either be on the casing you bought it in, available from its user manual or you can check the cover on the bottom of your laptop to see if they are there. The specifications should clearly state the screen size or in the least have the model number.

If you can’t access the specifications from the laptop’s packaging or cover, a quick search on your computer’s settings for the model information should work. The screen size can be found under the laptop properties, usually in the display settings folder. If not, try the advanced display settings tab. Be careful not to adjust these if you don’t understand what they represent.

In some cases, the search might reveal the model specifications and not the screen size. Use this model number to search online for the size of your screen. This may not be completely accurate information if it is general. Many times there will be a website specifically for your make and you can inquire from their customer service about the dimensions.

Another option would be to search online for similar devices to yours and try to approximate the size of your screen. Search for the make and/or model that comes closest to yours. This may not be accurate but may serve in the purpose you need the dimensions for, like in the situation of buying a laptop bag.

If you need the dimensions for purposes like purchasing screen guards or connecting to other screening devices, you will need more accurate measurements. A more appropriate search would be for a command line code that will produce the specs, for the tech-savvy ones. However, this need not be too complicated as you copy the code depending on your laptop model, paste it into your command prompt (you can search your computer for this application) and run the code. This code will provide accurate measurements depending on whether or not your drivers are up to date. You will need to know how to read these results.

Use an app or website

The digital world has revolutionized technology. Online Rulers are apps that help you measure elements on your laptop or desktop screen. You will need to download and install the software but it will save you loads of time compared to searching for lines of code and specifications. Though, this won’t work if you need to measure the bezel area. Some apps require you to enter your current display resolution and a few other screen specifications, then applications do the rest for you. However, most online rulers allow you to simply drag the edge of the displayed ruler from one corner to the other to get the lengths of your screen.

Virtual rulers are a great option because you can convert to different measurements and calibrate it as needed, you can also use them to measure different areas of your screen as well as images and other objects.

There are some great websites as well that will help you measure your laptop screen size. These websites require basic information like the make and model of the laptop, your current resolution or other provisions and can generate the measurements in seconds.

This is of course not the most accurate method due to errors that may exist within the website generator.

Use an object you already know the size of

You can use any object that you already know the measurements to, to measure your screen. A piece of paper or notebook can work. Notebooks usually have their measurements stated on the back or front covers. This method is highly erroneous and should be used as a last resort.
