What Is The Weight Of A Laptop?

You may not realize it, but the average weight of your laptop can affect its performance. Heavy laptops tend to heat up faster, which means they run slower. So if you plan on using your laptop for gaming or heavy work, you’ll want to look at the weight of the laptop before making any decisions.

Some manufacturers include extra padding inside the laptop case to protect against damage. However, this doesn’t mean that the laptop itself isn’t still quite heavy.

Laptop weights vary depending on the manufacturer and model. Some laptops weigh less than 2 pounds, while others weigh upwards of 10 pounds. You’ll want to consider the weight of your laptop before buying it.

So before you buy that laptop, take a moment to think about the weight of your current laptop. Then compare it to the specs and features of the laptop you’re thinking about buying.

What Is The Average Laptop Weight?

Laptops come in a variety of sizes and weights. Some laptops are very light, weighing less than 2 lbs., while others are quite heavy, weighing upwards of 8 lbs. The average laptop weighs somewhere in between those two extremes.

A general rule of thumb is to look at the width of the laptop and its overall dimensions. If the laptop is between 13-15 inches, then it’s probably going to weigh around two pounds. However, if the laptop is wider than 15 inches, then it’s going to be closer to 5 pounds.

You’ll find that most laptops fall within the weight range of 2-5 pounds. There are exceptions though, especially among ultraportable laptops. These types of laptops tend to be lighter than standard laptops, weighing anywhere from 1 pound to 4 pounds.

Chromebooks are ultra-lightweight computers that are great for students and professionals alike. These lightweight laptops are ideal for anyone who needs a computer that fits easily in their backpack or briefcase.

Both ultrabooks and Chromebooks are powered by either Windows or Chrome OS. Ultrabooks are typically larger and heavier than Chromebooks, but they still weigh only 2 to 3 pounds.

Chromebooks come in several sizes, including 10.1″, 12.3″, 14.0″, 15.6″, 17.3″, 18.4″, 19.7″, 21.5″, and 23.8″. You can find out more about Chromebooks here.

Ultraportable Laptops

There are tons of ultraportable laptops available today. You’ll find models ranging from under 3 lbs to over 4 lbs. Some come with touch screens, others don’t. Some have multiple USB ports, others only one. There are plenty of choices out there, so you should be able to find one that fits your needs.

You’ll probably want to look for ultraportable laptops that weigh between 2.5 – 3 lbs. These are usually thinner and lighter than larger laptops. They typically have a 14-inch display and may not have any external ports. However, if you really need those extra ports, you can always add them later.

Examples of powerful laptops include the Dell XPS13, the MacBook Air M2, Lenovo Legion, Lenovo Thinkpad, Lenovo Yogo, and the HP Pavilion 15.

Thin & Light Laptops

Laptops are getting thinner and lighter every year. These thin and light laptops are great for travelers and students. You’ll find models ranging from under 3 pounds to 6 pounds. Some of the most popular include the Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre x360, and the Apple MacBook Pro.

These thin and light laptops are ideal for traveling and studying. They’re small enough to fit easily in a backpack or briefcase, and they’re lightweight enough to carry around without any trouble.

You’ll find models ranging from 2.6 pounds to 5.9 pounds. Some of the thinnest and lightest laptops include the Acer Swift 7, Asus ZenBook UX305, and the Samsung Galaxy Book.

Some of the most popular thin and light laptops include the Dell XPS13, HP Spectre x360, and the Apple MacBook Pro.

Luggable Laptops

Today, most luggable laptops weigh between 5 pounds and 8 pounds. However, there are still some out there that weigh 10 pounds or more. These are called “heavy-duty” luggable laptops.

You may not think that a laptop weighing 10 pounds is very heavy, but if you’ve ever tried carrying one around, you’d probably agree that it feels pretty heavy. So, if you’re planning on using a heavy-duty luggable laptop, make sure that you plan accordingly.

For example, if you’re planning to carry it around every day, you might want to consider getting a bag that fits inside your car. Or, if you’re planning a trip where you’ll be walking around a lot, you might want to look into buying a backpack instead of a luggable laptop.

A heavy-duty luggable weighs more than a regular luggable laptop, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s any less portable. After all, it’s still light enough to be carried around easily.

So, if you’re thinking about getting heavy-duty luggage, make sure that you factor in its weight when deciding whether or not it’s worth it.

Desktop Replacement

This category of a laptop is meant to replace a desktop computer. These laptops are heavy and thick, but they pack powerful processors and graphics cards that rival those found on desktops.

These laptops are great if you want desktop-grade power without the weight and thickness of a traditional desktop computer. You won’t find any thin and light laptops here. Instead, you’ll find laptops that weigh between 4 and 6 pounds.

You’ll find laptops in this category from brands including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, and Toshiba.

How Is The Weight Of A Laptop Calculated?

A lot of times, manufacturers list the weight of a laptop without mentioning if there are batteries inside. However, if you look at the specs sheet, you might notice that there are different standard battery options available. You should consider adding the weight of those oversized batteries to the total weight of the laptop.

Other items that can add to the weight of a laptop include adapters, detachable keyboards, media bays, etc. These accessories can weigh quite a bit themselves. So, if you decide to purchase a new laptop, you may want to ask the seller if they have any extra accessories that you can buy separately.

Why Is Laptop Weight Important?

Lighter laptops are great if you’re a blogger, but not necessarily if you’re a graphic designer. A heavy laptop might be ideal for graphic designers, but not bloggers.

You should also keep in mind that larger screens mean larger fans. Fans are necessary to cool down your laptop, but they also add additional weight.

Some laptops come with built-in fans, but others require external ones. External fans are usually easier to install, but they’ll add extra weight to your laptop.

A lot of times, the more powerful your laptop is, the bigger the fan will need to become.

If you’re planning on using your laptop for work while you’re traveling, then you’ll probably want to consider getting a lightweight model. However, if you only plan on using it for leisure activities, then you might not need anything special.

A lightweight laptop is great for those who travel frequently. It’s lighter and easier to pack, and it doesn’t add any unnecessary bulk to your luggage. But if you’re going to be presenting at conferences and business meetings, then you’ll want to look for a laptop that has additional ports. These include USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, RJ45, and DisplayPort connectors, you might also want to bring power adapters.

You should also consider whether you need a touchscreen display. Some models come with touchscreens, while others require you to purchase a separate screen separately. Touchscreen displays are convenient, but they can be expensive.

School Or College

If you’re thinking about getting a laptop for school or college, you’ll want to consider the weight of the computer. A heavier laptop means it will be harder to lug around, especially if you plan on carrying it in a backpack every day.

You’ll also want to make sure that your laptop is sturdy enough to handle being tossed around from class to class. Laptops tend to be lighter than desktops, so they’re easier to toss around. However, laptops are still fairly durable, so you shouldn’t worry too much about dropping yours.

A midweight laptop should be able to handle being tossed around without breaking. Look at reviews online to find out whether or not the laptop you’re interested in is built well. Also, look at the warranty to make sure it covers any damage caused by dropping.

Use and Portability

A lighter-weight laptop may be easier to carry around, but if you plan on working at multiple locations throughout the day, a heavier model might be a better choice. A heavy laptop will require more effort to move around, but it will provide you with more options for connecting devices and peripherals.

Lightest laptops are generally easier to pull out of bags frequently and easier to put away, but if you plan only to work from one location, a desktop replacement laptop might be a better option for your needs. Desktop replacements are usually heavier than typical laptops, but they come with more functionality and connectivity options.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a new laptop. The most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to choose between portability and performance. There are plenty of laptop brands available that offer both. Just make sure that you get the right combination of features for your specific needs.
